Bill Schuette has remained silent while EPA Chief Scott Pruitt — someone he personally vouched for — has actively blocked the public from getting information about toxins in our water from corporate dumping.
Namely, we’re talking about PFAs (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance), which have been linked to a host of health problems like cancer, low birth weights, thyroid disorders, and others. PFAs are a big issue in West Michigan right now and are a threat across the state.
In February, Pruitt said he wants to tackle the PFAs problem, “Let’s get a game plan…so we can provide answers on this as quickly as possible,” he said.
Now we know that wasn’t true. Reports have surfaced showing Pruitt and the White House worked to block the publication of a federal health study on water contamination, including PFAs to avoid a public relations problem. The study showed the toxic chemicals examined were more dangerous to public health than the EPA previously thought.
PFAs was an issue brought up during an environmental question at the first GOP debate, which Schuette didn’t address directly, but clearly, it’s a problem the state’s top law enforcement official and the person in charge of consumer protection should be on top of. But that’s not the case.
Schuette has been silent while Pruitt has blocked research and the media from covering the issue of PFAs and what the Trump administration plans to do about it.
Protecting the environment and our public health has never been a high priority for Bill Schuette. And now that he has completely wed himself to the Trump bandwagon, we shouldn’t expect Schuette to stand up for Michigan families against Pruitt’s massive overreach and trying to block the public from information about toxins in their water.
Michigan deserves better out of our attorney general.
